I've discovered a lot about myself over the last eight months. I have also come to realise just how strong I am, when I need to be. I am continuing along a winding path, still unsure where it will lead. I have ups and downs. Days of optimism and exuberance, quickly swallowed up by moments of uncertainty and doubt. Physically, I feel as if I might finally be gaining some strength, as recently, I haven't experienced any of those sudden crashes in my energy levels, which knocked me for six on many occasions.
Summer has looked a little different this year. Usually, I'd have a holiday booked, days out, and be planning things in the background. Instead, I've had to learn to take things slowly. A different approach, especially seeing as I've lost a lot of my confidence, lately.
But, the weather! The weather here has been absolutely beautiful. We've been enjoying some gentle evening walks, kayaking at the lake, and compared with last year, we've eaten so many more of our meals outdoors. It's been wonderful.
There have been shady woodland wanderings, when the weather has been far too hot to stay in the sun.
Both cats are to be found lazing around in the garden. Boo occasionally disappears off into the long grass of the field, returning home covered in cleavers! I'm forever pulling them off his fur. While Mog stirs only to chase the butterflies, of which there have been so many this summer.
Along the lanes, the air is filled with the heady scent of meadowsweet, buddleia, and honeysuckle. I'm barefoot most days, and it all reminds me so very much of how summers felt when I was young.
Work ended on a high for me. I'd previously mentioned how my role had changed quite drastically since the start of the year, and I had more than a touch of imposter syndrome. Anyway, I had tried so hard to do the job to the best of my ability - only to find that my colleagues had all been absolutely delighted with my work. I was gifted so many cards and flowers. It was the nicest feeling to know that I must have been doing something right all along, and I can't tell you what a relief it also was.
I am off now until September, for some much needed rest time. Although, I have no doubt that it will go by quickly. Elderberries and blackberries are already beginning to ripen, the maize field has grown taller than I am, and the days are becoming noticeably shorter. The surrounding fields have turned to straw, as the summer sun has taken it's toll. The colours may change throughout the seasons, but the undulating outline of the fells remains reassuringly familiar and certain.
I really hope the days are being kind to you, and that you are having a lovely summer, wherever you are.
Back soon.

DeleteYour photo's are fantastic, I get your feelings of 'am I enough' I suffer the same, listen to those around you who confirm you are more than they expected. Enjoy your break in August, your landscape is greener than here down south.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Marlene. There had been a situation at work, which meant several of us suddenly got thrown in at the deep end. But, thankfully, we managed. I received some really lovely messages in the cards, which mean an awful lot to me. Xx
DeleteWho needs to go away on holiday when you have all that beauty on your doorstep. Enjoy the summer, plenty of rest and doing the things you enjoy will set you up for your return to work in September.
ReplyDeleteI am very lucky to have all this beautiful scenery close at hand. There really isn't anywhere I would rather be when the sun is shining. Thank you, Jo. X
DeleteLovely photos, you live in such a beautiful part of the country. Good news about your work and being appreciated when you had doubts. Enjoy the rest of your Summer break:)
ReplyDeleteThose cards and messages really meant so much to me. I had been standing in for a colleague, so I was concerned that I wasn't doing a good enough job and would be letting people down. X
DeleteSounds like you are having the perfect sort of summer with lots of opportunities to rest and relax. Make the most of those summery days. B x
ReplyDeleteThis summer has been really lovely so far, Barbara. I've quite enjoyed staying at home. X
DeleteCats have it all figured out, don't they? And you have photo proof.
ReplyDeleteI wish I could live more like a cat. X

ReplyDeleteThank you, Heather. Summer is my favourite season. X

All the best Jan
I was eyeing up some blackberries when I went for my run, yesterday. X
DeleteSummer had definitely been lovely so far. Perfect for unwinding and recharging your batteries
ReplyDeleteWe've really enjoyed spending so much time outdoors this summer. X
DeleteHi Jules, your photos are absolutely stunning! And seeing a sleeping cat is so soothing!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Linda. Boo sleeps soundly. He must be very content :)
DeleteThat loss of confidence - it happens 🧡. Then somewhere, from deep inside there is a little moment of bravado which helps you get going again. You just have to listen carefully. Hang in there x You are doing some lovely and brave things already x
ReplyDeleteIt's been quite a shock, Kate, but I'm pushing on through. Suddenly, I no longer feel invincible. Xx
DeleteIt is always nice to know that people really do appreciate all the hard work that you have done. Sometimes it can feel like such a hard slog at work and you have climbed and survived some high mountains this year. You are a survivor, Jules. I hope August is a good month for you as you enjoy the rest of the Summer in your beautiful part of the UK.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing your wonderful photos.
That is so kind of you to say, Beverley. Thank you. Summer has been beautiful this year - thankfully, there hasn't been a threat of wildfires where I live - so we've been enjoying spending a lot of time outdoors. X
DeleteI am glad you find a lot inner strength that guides you through a difficult time. A slow summer with lots of gentle but enjoyable activities sound like perfect plan. I think when it is hot, we can only really take it slow, just like the cats.
ReplyDeleteI am delighted to read that you got so much positive feedback from your colleagues. It is good to feel valued and also receive validation. I am sure everybody reading this blog knew without doubt that you would do amazing when challenged with a very different role at work :-)
Have a wonderful time off!
I had been really concerned about my ability to 'step up' at work, so it meant so much to find out that I was doing okay. The thought of letting people down did not sit well with me. X
DeleteHello lovely Jules!
ReplyDeleteI’m sorry you still have some struggles, but it sounds like you are such a strong person and are doing so well overall. There sure are beautiful areas around you and I love how you treasure & enjoy them. It must have felt so good to get the well deserved appreciation from your colleagues. I hope it helps build your confidence even more. Blessings to you and over all your work too. I hope you enjoy your time off and get to really rest and relax. 💗❌⭕️
Thank you, Carrie. I've spent a lot of time re-charging my batteries over the last few weeks. Xx
DeleteThank you for your transparency but your post shares so much hope as well. Sometimes things looks so different and take a shift from our normal! What beautiful pictures.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Chrissy. There is always hope. Xx
DeleteSorry to hear your confidence has taken a knock, I know imposter syndrome can be a very difficult voice to silence but hopefully the recognition from your colleagues went some way to stopping it. Those photos are glorious, and we’ve definitely been blessed with the weather to enjoy such beautiful surroundings xxx
ReplyDeleteMy health issues really knocked me sideways, along with the realisation that I am no longer invincible - who knew :)
DeleteI hope you're having a lovely summer. X
