October Sunshine

It wasn't the best start to the week. Storm Ashley arrived, and we were battered by strong winds and heavy rain. Roads were flooded and branches were strewn across pavements. Having transferred my pots into more sheltered corners of the garden, thankfully, the only damage here appeared to be my poor second sunflower, which snapped at its base, even though it had been securely tied. Never mind, it had been lovely while it lasted.

Besides the storm, it's been a quiet week, all told, mainly taken up with work and other uneventful happenings.  I've managed to settle into a new routine, clawed back a little time for myself, and as a result, I've felt much less stressed. On Tuesday, after a three week break, I went swimming again, which felt wonderful. I'm not a very strong swimmer, and I'm certainly not fast, but I managed to swim a mile, which is a great achievement for me. I'm going to try and keep it up as a regular activity now. I've already put in a request for some swimming goggles as a Christmas present. Next on the list will be a swimsuit that I actually feel comfortable wearing :)

Another activity, which I've been enjoying this week, is crochet. Yes, I've finally picked up my hook again, after what has felt like a very long time. Probably because it has been. With the help of an online tutorial, I've got my head around waffle stitch (thank you, Joy) and I've made a start on a baby blanket for a friend's grandson, who is due in January. It feels good to be doing something gently creative again, especially as it doesn't require too much thought or concentration on my part. I've no photographs to show you yet, but I'll be sure to take some for a future post.

The clocks went back in the early hours of this morning, which is why I'm awake ridiculously early, and I'm trying hard not to think too much about dark, gloomy evenings. Instead, I'm focusing on bright cold days, filled with autumn sunshine. Since the start of the week, we've seen a great improvement in the weather, here, but it has felt unseasonably warm.

Later this week, it will be Hallowe'en. In a few days I will decorate the porch with cobwebs, spiders and bats, and our cauldron will be filled with sweets to welcome any scary visitors we may receive. To be honest, the cobwebs and spiders are often to be found there, but I'll add some fake ones for visual effect.

There are still the pumpkins to carve, and although I often have thoughts of doing something a little bit different, I usually keep with tradition and stick to a regular, scary face. 🎃 And another thing I definitely shall be doing, is toasting the pumpkin seeds. Delicious!

At the weekend, we will be wrapping up warmly, and meeting with friends at a local bonfire and firework display. Still making the most of those moments, before my thoughts turn to those end of year festivities.

Back soon.

J. X

    1. As I've got older, I've learned to embrace autumn, but i've found myself enjoying it even more, this year. The colours are beautiful. Xx

  2. We didn't get that storm, thankfully. It sounds like our Northern neighbours bore the brunt.
Gorgeous photos as always, Jules. I picked up a huge sack of quality wool from the charity shop for £3.50 the other day, I'm waiting for crochet inspiration to strike, I'm not feeling it yet!
    Have a lovely week. xxx

  3. It's nice that we've still got some lovely days appearing in between the rain and storms, a blue sky lifts my mood during the colder months. I used to swim regularly but I can't remember the last time I went, it's something I really should get back to, it's such good exercise. Well done on your mile, that's some going, especially after a three week break. I always dread the clocks going back, time to hunker down of an evening now I suppose.

    1. Yes, this time of year is always so lovely, when we're not experiencing continual rainy days.
I'm really enjoying going swimming each week. It began out of necessity but it has become a time just for me, when I can simply switch off. Xx

  4. Pretty pictures. I've not seen much good tree color. I think our draught conditions may keep the trees from being as colorful as they normally are. I envy your swimming. It's such good exercise, so good for the joints. I'm not a swimmer...I don't float. Well, I sorta do, but several inches below the water not on top of it. Glad you're back to crocheting and look forward to seeing some pictures of your project.

    1. Thank you, Sandy. Oh, I'm rubbish at floating, as well. I have to keep swimming, or I just start to sink! Xx

  5. It sounds like that was quite a storm – I always worry about the winds blowing trees over, while I love their shade in the summertime, I’m always worried one will come down a little too close to the roof. How great - swimming a mile is a terrific accomplishment! As far as a comfortable swimsuit – I’m thinking I need the style that ladies wore 100 years ago😊 Enjoy your preparations for Halloween, always fun to see the little ones in costumes - and if you’re in a pinch and no time to carve your pumpkin, maybe try what I do - add a very large bit to a drill and give the pumpkin polkadots once it’s hollowed out - a pretty glow and so quick and easy!

    1. The wind was very blustery here. Thankfully we didn't receive anything like the worst of the storm.
I like your pumpkin idea. Lily didn't want to visit the pumpkin patch this year, and if I'm being honest, we'd have struggled to.find the time. We'll be carving our home grown ones on Wednesday. Xx

  6. I am glad you are finding a bit more time for yourself. You are absolutely a strong swimmer! One mile, this would take me all morning… I am very impressed. Crochet is such a gentle activity. I must admit, I have been eyeing up granny square blankets recently, I think I have a wee blanket brewing in me. Baby blankets are a good size, not too big to be daunting. Enjoy Halloween this week and any self-care time that you are able to squeeze in x

    1. Thank you for your kind words.
I'm hoping that the more I swim, I might become stronger and more confident in the water. I didn't have lessons as I child, so I taught myself to swim when I was 10 years old. Xx

  7. You can't beat some pleasant October sunshine and lovely Autumnal colours as shown in your beautiful photographs.

Well done on your swimming and crochet.

Enjoy your Halloween preparations. The grandchildren will soon be visiting the Pumpkin Patch and hopefully the weather will stay dry for any Halloween and Firework events there may be.

Wishing you a good week ahead.

    All the best Jan

  8. Hi Jules. I'm thankful the storm wasn't any worse. Sorry to hear about your sunflower. I lost several zinnias when the hurricane came through here last month. I love these October days, especially the sunny ones. Today is the only day I can think of so far this month that we haven't had sun. We had rain for the first time since late September last night. The temperature dropped today with highs in the mid-50s. We are expected to be back in the 70's by Tuesday. I managed to get a walk in today despite the lack of sun which truly motivates me. Our clocks will go back next weekend. Something I'm never excited about. Good for you for taking some time for yourself. It is so important that we do. Glad to hear you are feeling less stressed. I hope you and Lily have a nice evening carving pumpkins and celebrating Halloween on Thursday. Toasted pumpkin seeds are my favorite!

  10. Hello, lovely friend. I love the cozy feel of your space here. I wish I could crochet. Any advice for someone who has never attempted anything creative? I also enjoy swimming. Although, I don't think I could keep up with you! I like what you said about enjoying this time. Before we know it we will be thinking about Christmas!

Yes, I'm trying very hard not to think too much about Christmas, just yet, although I did take delivery of some delightful little bells, the other day ;) Xx

    1. I was sad to see the sunflower had snapped. Even though it wouldn't have lasted for much longer, it was a lovely reminder of summer. Having said that, we've enjoyed some bright autumn sunshine, this year, and it looks like there is more forecast during the next few weeks. Xx

  13. Since having my virus and its best friend a few weeks ago I have been extremely tired…like really really. I am now wondering if our distinct lack of sunshine has anything to do with it and was grateful to spend some time clearing out the summer tubs yesterday. We only get half an hour for lunch and certainly no time to soak the sun, some of the clinic rooms are more like dungeons! X

    1. The trees are looking beautiful, this year. It must be down to all the rain we experienced, during the summer :)
We're going to be carving our pumpkins this afternoon. I've just this minute brought them in from the garden and given them a bit of a wash. Xx

  15. Your autumn photos are so beautifully vibrant. I love them.

A 'coffee friend' and I had the honour of judging our little town centre Saturday Morning Market pumpkin faces for the second year. Unfortunately the weather was dire and the rain torrential so our job wasn't as arduous as usual ie there were fewer entries brought along). Tasting the pumpkin pies is always the hard part for me but this year there were fewer and the job manageable and there was one clear winner: I never asked her what she had done to enhance the flavour so much.

Judging pumpkins sounds like a fun job, although the miserable weather you could have done without. We'll be carving ours this afternoon. Hopefully there will be plenty of flesh for soup making, and seeds for toasting. Xx

I expect we'll wake up to frost one morning, before long, then it will feel properly cold. Xx

    1. Once I'd watched the tutorial, I realised that waffle stitch is actually very simple, which means the blanket is nice and easy to work on. I can pick up where I left off, whenever I get the opportunity. Xx
