Early November

I think I may have mentioned before about how reassuringly predictable the seasons have been, this year. So, it came as no surprise when November arrived grey and damp. The days have been so gloomy, that during the week it often seems as though I hardly get to experience daylight.

It is for that reason, sometimes this time of year can feel like a bit of a slog. Almost a lull. As if I'm holding my breath, preparing myself for when December arrives. Then I have to keep reminding myself that our Yuletide celebrations look very different these days. And even though they are still just as enjoyable, they no longer need to be planned for weeks in advance.

Last week, we went to our local bonfire and fireworks display. It was such a great evening and very well supported. It was a great opportunity to meet up with friends from the village, and to enjoy a good catch-up before the fireworks began. Luckily the rain held off, and we were treated to a fantastic display. And even though the air was damp, we managed to stay lovely and warm by the fire. Also, I might have been holding my insulated coffee mug, but let's just say it wasn't coffee inside ;)

The weekend weather forecast had been mixed, but we made the most of the one dry day, and took a walk up to Hill Top. Leaving the car behind, we took the small ferry across the lake, then, after taking a short detour to visit Claife Viewing Station, we walked the leaf strewn path up alongside the lane. We continued past Far Sawrey, along by the church, then across the muddy field to Near Sawrey.

It was quite a breezy day, and we spent a while trying to catch some of the falling leaves. It was all fun and games until one of us almost fell in the lake. Yes, that was me! We enjoyed a good look around the house, and managed to find the 'Two Bad Mice' hidden in various cupboards and corners.

Then, as I'd taken our new flask with us, we enjoyed some delicious hot chocolate, while sitting in the garden. A very lovely way to spend our morning.

This week, the autumn colours have begun to fade. Most of the trees are now bare, changing the countryside to a more muted, bleak landscape. Frosts have been forecast for the next few days, and there is already a distinct chill in the air.

  1. It has been very wet here over the last few days and most of the leaves have been stripped off either by the winds or persistant rain. They were beautful colours only a week or two ago when we returned from our holiday.
We didn't go to any organised firework/bonfire night event as we had only just returned home but we saw lots of colourful displays from our bedroom windows.
I'm glad you managed to get out for a while when the weather was better and enjoy Hill Top and the surrounding area. Have a great week ahead, Jules x

    1. We've experienced a substantial amount of heavy rain this week. The days have been mostly dark and gloomy, and the trees are looking quite bare. Xx

  2. Our local bonfire was cancelled during Covid and hasn't happened since. I'm not really a fan of bonfire night but it was nice for the community to come together. The council displays around Leeds were axed a few years ago as a cost cutting exercise. I'm glad that you enjoyed the night and that your local event was well supported. Your photos brought back memories of our visit to Hill Top earlier this year, it's definitely somewhere I'd like to visit again. I think it's one of those places where you'll discover things you missed on previous visits.

    1. I think the community coming together is one of the reasons why I like going to the bonfire. These sort of events are few and far between. X

  3. I'm glad it stayed fine for the bonfire and firework display, it poured down all day and evening here but it still sounded like World War 3. I've never been a lover of bonfire night so I stayed in the warmth of home. I love your first two photos, the view in the second one is framed beautifully 😊

    1. I don't like huge events, but this one doesn't get too busy and it really brings the local community together. X

  4. So pleased the weather was okay for the bonfire and fireworks.
Still nice to see some Autumn colour but the rain from Storm Claudia has brought down plenty more leaves.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend.

    All the best Jan

    1. Yes, we were lucky that the rain held off for us. I think it would have been fairly miserable otherwise. Having said that, it had rained so much on the run up to the event, that I'm surprised they got the bonfire lit in the first place. Xx

  5. We used to take the boys when they were younger. The local park in the next village used to invite the local fire service to put on a display. They stopped that before Covid and sadly never re-started it. Now we have the dog, we tend to stay in. Thankfully Angus isn't scared of thunder or fireworks - though he hates people sneezing!
Lovely photos of your day out, thank you for sharing. I really must get round to sharing my holiday photos this summer x

    1. I love that ours still has a bonfire, as many events only have a firework display. It must be a relief that Angus isn't afraid of fireworks - my old dog used to be so terrified that he'd try and hide behind the washing machine! Thankfully, the cats don't appear to care. X

    1. Thank you, Bless. I'm also rather relieved that I didn't fall into the lake. It's much colder than it was during the summer. Xx

  8. Beautiful photos, especially inside the house it must have been fun searching for the 'two bad mice', hot chocolate afterwards sounds just right. Glad you didn't fall into the lake, the ferry ride across it sounds like fun too:)

  10. We were able to watch some fantastic fireworks going off in the skies at the back of our house. Didn't even have to move from the sofa. I'm not a fan of standing around in the cold and dark so the sofa was the perfect spot.. Hot chocolate would be perfect to keep you warm..

  12. The days are certainly getting dark early-I’m working to make Sunday a day of rest so today was spent reading, a cup of tea, and yes, a little nap. This time of year just seems to invite us to slow down - and that’s OK with me. The bonfire looks amazing - and a visit to Hill Top would be lovely-thanks for taking us along!

  14. Hello dear Jules!
Your weather sounds so much like ours. We are waiting for the first sticking of white stuff and the pretty, and insulation, it brings along with the cold. Your bonfire night looks like it was lovely and sounds like it was a lot of fun. The landscape there in every season is so gorgeous. Every picture is a painting that I just want to pop into. I love the "find the bad mice" game - that looks like it would be fun and so cute. I hope you can embrace the cozy and enjoy this calm time of preparation before the busyness of the holiday season ahead. Blessings always. 💗

    1. Hi, Carrie. We currently have a light sprinkling of snow on the higher fells. It's turned incredibly cold here now, and I expect it will be frosty again in the morning. Xx

  15. How lovely to still have a village bonfire and fireworks display! I would much prefer this over my crazy neighbours personal bonfire and display, too close to our own house for comfort. This seems to be the only time a year he is somewhat alive... alas, that's maybe just the grumpy me talking. November is not in the best month, isn't it? Somewhere between a glorious autmn and a celebratory December... Nearly there! Loved that fabulous four poster bed at Hilltop House. Cx
