Grassington and York

We'd only been back at home for a few days, when we were on our way to York. I'd initially intended to travel there on the Saturday morning, spend just one night in the city, then travel home again the day after. But I decided it would be really good to enjoy a full day there without the need to rush around. As luck would have it, I managed to find an inexpensive room in the Youth Hostel on the Friday evening, so I thought it would be great to extend our weekend by including stop offs at Grassington and Bolton Abbey.

Ever since Lily and I watched All Creatures Great and Small, earlier this year, we really wanted to see the village where much of the filming took place. Grassington, in North Yorkshire, is magically transformed into the fictional village of Darrowby, especially for filming the series. We enjoyed a walk by the river, and then spent some time in the village square where we recognised many of the buildings, which were familiar to us from the show.

'The Drovers Arms'

'Skeldale House'. I was slightly disappointed to discover that the house porch and pillars, which are so recognisable in the show, are not part of the building and are, in fact, made from fibreglass.

If you would like to learn more about this remarkable village transformation, then you can read about it here.

From Grassington we drove to Bolton Abbey. It had been years since my last visit here, and it seemed quite different to how I remembered it. Although, I'm certain it wouldn't have changed at all. Funny how our minds work at times.

We explored the ruins, then walked through the woods and along the river to The Strid, a narrow section of the River Wharfe, which is noted for being one of the most dangerous stretches of water in the world, due to it's power and depth. Don't worry, we kept well back from the edge. The roar of the water was incredible.

On the way back to our car, Lily couldn't resist going over the stepping stones, again. I gave it a miss on this occasion, using the bridge, while Lily strode across with ease.

After a busy day we were more than ready for our chippy tea and a good night's sleep. The extra night at the Youth Hostel had been a great idea, and it meant we were up early and ready for our day in York.

The sun was shining, and we spent a lovely day sightseeing, with my daughter as our guide - as well as having lovely company, I had no need to concern myself with directions :)

We were excited to walk the city walls, as on our previous visit here - during a very cold December- they had been closed due to the icy conditions! We took a walk around The Minster, ate our picnic lunch in the beautiful Museum Gardens, before marvelling at the extraordinary medieval buildings down The Shambles. In the evening we went for dinner at an Italian restaurant, which had been recommended to us. I had the Vegetable and Goats Cheese Lasagne, which was absolutely delicious, while Lily chose Pizza.

Back soon.

  1. All places I've visited many times but I never get fed up with them. We happened to visit Grassington one time when it was all set up ready for filming, I think they made a good decision in choosing Grassington as the location as the village has that olde worlde feeling to it anyway.

    1. There's always something new to see, isn't there. Or you can be like me, and completely forget what it's like there :)
Grassington is lovely. And it must have been amazing to have seen it all set up for filming. X

  3. Oh Jules, what lovely photos! I'm so jealous you were in the Yorkshire Dales....I keep telling my girlfriend how much I love All Creatures Great and Small and want to go there one day. Thank you so much for sharing because it's just dreamy to get to see your photos and have you share what it's like. And parts of York look so much like Harry Potter. Lol I think I read once that's where the Diagon Alley inspo came from? I just loved gazing at the pics and pretending I was there. Blessings on the rest of your week! xoxo 💗

    1. I had heard that The Shambles might have been the inspiration behind Diagon Alley, but never having watched the films or read the books, I really wouldn't be able to say whether or not I agree :) I know, I must be the only person!
Our visit to Grassington was really lovely. I've just noticed how ominous those clouds look in my photographs, although the weather was still warm and bright. X

It was many years ago now that I visited York ... so much to see, I'd definitely recommend a visit!

Your Vegetable and Goats Cheese Lasagne sounds delicious and I'm sure Lily enjoyed her pizza.

Enjoy the rest of the week.

    All the best Jan

  6. I agree with all the above, it is so generous of you to share photos of your trips. I am unable to do such trips but did many years ago. How could Lily not resist the stepping stones! Thank you Jules. x

    1. 'Generous' is very kind of you to say, as I often worry that I post far too many photographs. I do love exploring different places, and it feels wonderful that I get to share them with you.
Without any hesitation, Lily marched straight across those stepping stones - twice!

  7. I really enjoyed seeing your photos, I haven't been to York for a few years and didn't know that ACGAS was filmed in Grassington. I'm not sure I would have been as brave as Lily to walk across those stepping stones, lol the way my week has been going I would have probably ended up in the water!

    1. She didn't even hesitate, Maggie. I can almost guarantee that I would have ended up in the water, if I'd attempted to cross them, myself.
I hope your week is improving. Xx

  9. York is somewhere we visit regularly and often remember with a smile. We had our worst ever cooked breakfast at a b and b there and were gobsmacked to hear other guests praising it. I wouldn't even attempt those stepping stones..

  14. So many places I visited when I was young Jules. Haworth was another favourite haunt of mine. William Wordsworth visited Bolton Abbey and wrote about it. Smashing photos like always.

  15. You seem to have packed so much in to a short space of time, Jules. I loved 'All Creatures Great and Small' so Grassington would be a place for me to visit too. York is a firm favourite as well. I'm glad you were both able to walk the walls this time and also enjoy the Minster and Shambles. Thank you for sharing your wonderful photos.

  18. Gogeous photos, Jules! I love that weathered Yorkshire stone.
I spent many a drunken weekend exploring the pubs of York in the 1980s as a good friend was at the uni. Its all a bit of a blur now but I do remember the stink of burnt sugar from the refinery near her flat! xxx
