At the End of June

The year is marching on. It's only a few weeks until summer break and the end of Lily's first year in secondary school. It feels like no time at all since we were preparing for the big transition, yet here we are already twelve months on, and wondering what all the big fuss was about. Some things don't change, however, as I've been busy ordering new shirts and trousers in readiness for the autumn term.

This week, I've been finding comfort in the ordinariness of my days. Weekend plans were cancelled at short notice and, although disappointed, I found myself relishing the lack of time constraints, and of the need to be organised. Monday to Friday it often feels like every single minute is accounted for, so when these opportunities arise, I embrace them, as I realise they are few and far between.

The weather has been fairly mixed here, and the warm summer rain has kept the garden well watered, so I don't have to. I think the flowers are looking at their best just now. In just a few more weeks, they will begin to lose their colour, and look a little worse for wear. In the raised bed, I'm  keeping a close eye on the beetroot and carrots, but the spring onions are being used regularly, most recently in this evening's stir fry. Unfortunately, the lemon trees still haven't produced any flowers, so I'll just have to remain hopeful for another year. They are, at least looking strong and healthy.

Another garden I've also enjoyed recently, was at Sizergh Castle, and it's looking incredibly beautiful just now. To our delight, the Lily Pads appear to have taken over the pond, and we enjoyed watching the damselflies and dragonflies hovering just above them.

And of course, for my very own Lily, no visit to Sizergh would be complete without seeing Charlie.

Also, this week, I'm excited to have begun work on a new crochet project. It's something I've had in mind for a while now, and just another small part of trying to reintroduce some colour into my life. I'll share more soon.

  1. It's amazing how time flies when they get to secondary school! I remember my niece in year 5 in lockdown and now she is ending year 1 and is very grown up!

  2. Although it can be disappointing when plans are cancelled, it somehow seems like you've been granted some extra time to do with as you wish, definitely a luxury in the times we're living in now where our days seem to be full. Sizergh Castle looks lovely, it's nice to see such full borders and of course, a visit anywhere is instantly better when a cat's involved.

  4. It's wonderful that you were able to change the disappointment of having plans cancelled to enjoying the extra free time that resulted from it. Lovely gardens, too. :)

  5. This year has flown along so far, especially the last couple of months. It' s a shame when plans get cancelled but sometimes it can be a benefit too. The garden looks lovely and so does the cat. I love the way most NT properties always have a cat to look our for:)

  8. I love the sound of your summer days, it sounds relaxing and rather nice, even though weekend plans were not shaping up as thought. Time flies, doesn't it? This is the first year in 20 that I am not buying school uniforms, very strange indeed. Sizbergh Castle looks stunning, I want to go there like this very moment. Cx

    1. That must feel incredibly strange for you. Although, I don't think we ever get rid of that back to school feeling in September. I'm just hoping her shoes hold out for the next two weeks :)

  9. Lilly's first year at secondary school has gone so quickly. Hope she enjoyed her year and made new friends.
Sizergh castle looks delightful and as it is NT, I shall be adding it to our places to visit .
Shame about the weekend cancelled plans but every cloud has a silver lining as they say, and it gave you some time to relax and please yourself what to do.
Have a lovely week ahead x

  10. Everything looks so lovely-the flowers, the castle, your garden bounty! I’m glad that school is going well, that’s a big transition for both of you. You’re so right - the ordinariness of the days can bring the rest and peace of mind that we so very much need. Looking forward to seeing your crochet project!
