Colours of Autumn

November is hurrying by, and I haven't been in this space as much as I would have liked. Not that I have much to report - my days have been rather ordinary.

Mog and Boo are getting more and more used to their shared living arrangement. Unfortunately, it seemed that when I rescued Boo, I also 'rescued' a virus, and although Boo was completely asymptomatic, it did result in a trip to the vets for Mog. She is totally fine now, of course. In fact, she appears even more playful than she was before, and my mornings have become much more lively :)

Speaking of viruses, I was a little unwell myself last week. It wasn't serious, and fortunately it didn't stop me from getting out and enjoying a gentle walk in a fleeting moment of autumn sunshine. And thank goodness I did, the weather so far this month has been pretty dismal. I'm certain Novembers never used to be so dreary. I have memories of far more bright autumn days and clear blue skies, but perhaps, in reality, they were always damp and grey.

I've been resting as much as I have been able, and have spent some time crocheting the blanket for my friend. I really need to start making more progress soon, before her baby arrives!

The vibrant greens of summer have given way to pale golden grasses and the bracken, which covers the fell side, has become a rich russet brown, gradually retreating and revealing tracks often hidden during the summer months.

My thoughts are now turning towards the end of year :)  Now that my working hours have increased, I have been feeling more concerned than usual as to how I am going to find enough time to organise everything, but I am reminding myself what is really important. For me, this year it will mean sending a few cards, exchanging some small gifts, and an appreciation for the warmth and joy of the season. This year, more than ever, will be especially difficult for so many.

Today, we are forecast snow up on the higher fells. Winter is on it's way.

  6. Beautiful scenery and colors! You take some of the best photos I've seen. :)
Sorry to hear that Boo brought home a virus and Mog caught it; glad that she's all better now.
Sorry, too, that you've been under the weather, yourself. Hope you are able to rest and recover soon.
Yes, continue to focus on what's important and you will find that things will sort themselves out. What will Lily remember the most when she looks back on the holidays? Concentrate on those things. :)

    1. Thank you, Bless. I'm feeling much better now, although I suspect I would have recovered much more quickly had I allowed myself to rest. I just couldn't miss getting out on such a glorious autumn day :)
And Mog is back to being her sassy self as well - someone needs to keep Boo in check!
Christmas for me is all about enjoying the season. Thankfully, spending on expensive gifts has never featured highly in my priorities. Xx

Lots of rain here today and quite cold but no snow forecast yet.
Thank you for sharing the autumnal colours of the fells. They really are beautiful in all seasons.

  8. Your muted colors are much more lovely, than ours.

Please don't let the Holidays stress you. What possible good does it do, for you or for anyone?????????

    Gentle hugs...

    1. The fells are beautiful at any time of year, but I think they look especially lovely on a bright autumn day.
My Christmas celebrations are much more simple these days, although dealing with the expectations of others can prove rather challenging :)

  10. It has been a grey, damp autumn hasn't it, November is often like that, I always think that October is the month for blue skies, I am sure it is why the autumn and winter feel so long as it feels like it has already started in November when in reality it is still autumn. I am sorry to hear that you have been under the weather, I do hope you are feeling a little better now.

    1. I think you're right, and it did feel quite wintry when I cycled to work yesterday. I remember last year it snowed at the end of November. Lily and I went to Grasmere and I was worried about the drive home :)

  11. Lovely to see Ambleside, a favourite holiday spot when I was a teen! Your photos are glorious, a pleasant change from in the endless dark skies and incessant rain of yesterday!
Poor Mog, I'm glad she's on the mend (sorry, I always assumed she was a boy!) I'm glad both you and she are on the mend and that Boo is settling in well.
I hope the snow stays away unless, of course, you like it! xxx

  12. As always, your photos make me so happy...thrilled you share them. The stone arch, building, and fence are just beautiful to me. And you're thinking is spot on...don't lose one bit of sleep worrying about getting organized. Choosing to do what's important...cards to those most special, gifts chosen with love, and time spent together; you've absolutely planned the end of the year perfectly.. Glad you're feeling better so you can enjoy these autumn days. Mary

    1. Thank you, Mary, that is very kind of you to say. And would you believe a family of eight once lived in the little bridge house!
Thankfully, my days of losing sleep over Christmas are well behind me, although it can be a challenge managing other people's expectations. Xx

  13. Hello! I'm brand new to your blog, found it thru the Three Cottage blog. As soon as I saw the stone walls in these pics I thought, 'That's not in the US. We don't have awesome remnants of the past like that.' lol Anyway, looking forward to reading more here! =)

  14. If I'm not mistaken, that last photo is The Bridge House. I have a Lilliput Lane ornament of it. I hope you're feeling better now, and that Mog is on the mend too. So many viruses around at this time of year. The weather has definitely changed, I can feel that winter isn't far away now, and though the temperatures keep dropping, it's still a little mild for the time of year.

I'm feeling much better now, thank you Jo. The temperature has dropped here over the last few days, and the forecast looks set to be much less wet going forward. Xx

    1. Mog and Boo are getting along just fine, and they make a cute pair. The main difficulty I have is in ensuring they each keep to their own food dish :)
I hope your mo-jo returns soon. Xx
