For me, the first day of summer was one of quiet contentment. One of those days when life just feels good, that if I could I would re-live it all over again.
The day began as usual, but once work and chores were out of the way I spent much of the afternoon in the garden. The morning's cloud cover had disappeared, giving way to a gloriously clear blue sky and once I had planted out Lily's birthday sunflowers, I sat for a while and enjoyed some elderflower cordial in the bright sunshine. I wasn't alone for long, however, as I suddenly felt a familiar nudge against my leg - Mog had crept out of the house to join me following her long morning sleep, quickly jumping up onto the table expecting a fuss. She can be incredibly gentle and affectionate when she chooses to be. You would never think that recently she generously gifted us ten mice in just over three days. Ten!!!
Our strawberries have begun to ripen now and they looked so very tempting to me but, at her insistence, I left them for Lily to pick when she arrived home from school. And they were definitely worth the wait, so very sweet and delicious.
In the evening I went for a run along the canal towpath, through the fields and out past the village. The air was still incredibly warm at this time. The track, bordered with an abundance of wildflowers, welcomed bees and butterflies, with the sound of crickets in the long grass breaking the quiet.
Even later that evening, my friend and I went for a walk up Gummer's How, overlooking Windermere. We chatted, drank coffee and laughed a lot as the air turned chilly, the light began to fade and we watched the sun set on the longest day of the year.

What beautiful photos of the landscape. I feel peaceful just looking at them. You live in a very special place. I'm glad you had such a wonderful day, and hope there will be many more to come this summer!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Sue. It was a perfect way to spend the evening. X
DeleteTEN! That's extreme generosity! (shudder)
ReplyDeletexx
She is a very generous cat. X
DeleteNot sure I could cope with the generosity of a cat. Once again another invigorating stroll showing the beauty of the area you live, looks idyllic.
ReplyDeleteI think I've just about got used to Mog's generosity but I would much prefer to do without it. The joys of cat ownership. X
DeleteSolstice blessings to you too. xx.
ReplyDeleteSorry I have been AWOL, trying to have a little catch up.
How generous of Mog - does she bring you her presents live and still kicking or are they delivered as a 'convenience snack'? 🤪
It's good to see you back, Jayne. The more recent gifts have been in snack form, but it's not unheard of for them to be live and kicking. X
DeleteBeautiful photos. Mog is a supreme mouser, she reminds me, in colouring, of a cat we used to have. He never brought us presents home so I didn't think he hunted but on one particular visit to the vets she enquired if he was a hunter. I replied that I didn't think so but after she felt his tummy she informed us that he definitely was, he obviously just didn't want to share his bounty with us, thank goodness! Oh, those strawberries look delicious, that's the thing I miss most about my allotment.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Jo. Yes, the last time Mog was having her annual check up, the vet informed me she had a very full tummy, so I can only imagine how many she actually manages to catch. We might live by a field but I doubt we will have a mouse problem while Mog is around. X
DeleteWho could fail to be uplifted by those views? Stunning! Your strawberries look lucious. We tried growing them a couple of years ago but most didn't get bigger than a finger nail. Lovely picture of Mog - but I can't say I'd be too pleased with the abundance of 'gifts'!
ReplyDeleteThe strawberries are the best they have ever been. Previously, we have never had much success, but at the end of last year's season I transplanted just two plants into a large pot and they have thrived, producing some lovely fruit. Lily has just picked another ten for us to eat this evening. X
DeleteLovely views you shared. Beautiful. I love your cat. We found it was usually females who hunt. But our aged male cannot resist the odd bird that flutters which has not been good for begging babies. Fortunately he sleeps a lot.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Jill. Mog can go for days without gifting us anything, but then she makes up for it, especially at this time of year. X
DeleteYour kitty is doing what she is meant to do. Good for her. No reason she can't be sweet and loving too. ,-)))))))
ReplyDeleteOh those strawberries!!!!!! Yes, let Lily pick them, when home from school.
Which reminds me.... Our grandson next door, is being home schooled. Now and then, he takes a break from his school work, and does something active, like run outside to the garden, and check on his strawberries. :-)
I think that is so lovely! Being able to take a bit of a break, and run and check something. Then come back in, and learn some more. I'm so happy, that both Mommy and Daddy work from home, and are thus _able_, to home school him. And actually, a day's school work, does not take-all-day. So much of real school, is baby sitting. -sigh-
Gorgeous, gorgeous views, on your Mid Summer!!!
✨✨✨✨
I have no issue with Mog doing what she is meant to do, I just wish it wasn't quite so often at times :)
DeleteYour grandson is very fortunate. It's good for children to take regular breaks from their work, especially if they get to go outdoors and have a run around. X
Sounds like a perfect day and a glorious place for a run. B x
ReplyDeleteIt really was, Barbara. It felt very special. X
DeleteOh my goodness!
ReplyDeleteWhat glorious photos of the longest day of the year!
And those berries!!!!
Enjoy many more lovely summer days, my friend.
Thank you, Billie Jo. Days like this are to be treasured. X
DeleteThose strawberries look delicious and I love that you enjoyed a beautiful late evening walk. We've just had the winter solstice and our skies are looking very similar here too, not very wintery at all! xx Susan
ReplyDeleteI don't really like to think about our days becoming shorter now. At least it won't be noticeable for a while. X
DeleteMog is such a generous cat! Those strawberries look delicious! I enjoyed seeing all the photos. I know everyone says this, but, you do live in a lovely part of the world!
ReplyDeleteVery generous! It's a good thing I like her. 🐱
DeleteA very generous cat you have Jules, eek! Your strawberries look delicious and the views where you live are awesome. It must feel like you're permanently on holiday. My husband always wanted to live in the Lake District but we settled in Lincolnshire. I'm not sure that we'd do a big move again, though we'll likely downsize at some point in the future. Cx
ReplyDeleteI brace myself whenever I hear the familiar click of the cat flap, wondering if Mog is bringing home a 'gift.'
DeleteAnd yes, I feel very fortunate living where I do, even if it means there is a never-ending supply of mice! X
Oh, what stunning photographs! Those views look incredible. How fun that must have been to enjoy coffee there with your friend.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Stephenie. Had I not been driving I would have been drinking something stronger! 😊
DeleteTEN .... that's a lot of gifted love from Mog!
ReplyDeleteUnnecessary gifted love. X
DeleteStunning photos! Your strawberries look absolutely delicious! And what a mouser your Mog is! Best, Jane :)
ReplyDeleteThank you, Jane. The strawberries taste so good. X
DeleteI could just eat those strawberries now! Our old cat was like Bagpus and too lazy to chase anything - not even tempted. Stunning views you have - I love passing through Cumbria on our way to Scotland. x
ReplyDeleteThe strawberries are so delicious, Vivien. Lily is eating some with her lunch every day now. X
DeleteI think I've said this before, but you really do live in such a beautiful part of the country. Your strawberries look absolutely delicious! It sounds like you are enjoying summer so far!
ReplyDeleteI do love the summer, Julia. I hope we enjoy plenty of warm sunshine this year. X
DeleteLovely photographs. The strawberries look perfect.
ReplyDeleteThank you. X
DeleteWhat a fabulous summer day.
ReplyDeleteLoved all of your photographs.
Those strawberries look delicious.
All the best Jan
Thank you, Jan. It was very enjoyable and watching the sunset was the perfect end to the day.
DeleteThose pictures are just breathtaking. I could do with a walk round there to shift some of these cobwebs.
ReplyDeleteHugs-x-
Thank you, Sheila. I'm hoping your cobwebs will blow away very soon. X
DeleteThose strawberries look so delicious...we are harvesting a small amount along with some raspberries each evening and sharing them out after tea...of course I am being very good and eating them in the nude...as in with no cream or sugar or any other naughtiness! x
ReplyDeleteI think home grown are so much nicer than shop bought, and they taste so delicious and fresh. The strawberries are so sweet they don't need any sugar. X
DeleteThe strawberries looks delicious, I bet Lily loved picking them didn't she. Wouldn't be so keen on the mice though! What a lovely way to spend some time with a friend. Not long until the summer holidays now :) xx
ReplyDeleteThe strawberries are almost all gone now, Suzanne, but they have been delicious. I hope you and yours are keeping well and you've been able to spend some time relaxing at the caravan. Ony two and a half weeks to go!!! X
DeleteLovely sunset photos! I like what you said about the first day of Summer. I too have some days that would love to re-live it. Have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Angela. It was just such a lovely day. I hope we get to enjoy many more like it this summertime. X
DeleteLots of summery beauty here. What lovely things you did on the first day of summer. x
