After the Storm

At the end of last week, with the threat of the incoming storm and high winds, I made sure I prepared the garden, securing the planters and moving the potted trees to more sheltered positions. And thank goodness I did.
The rain began late on Friday and continued during the night. It rained and rained. We planned to hunker down on the Saturday morning, then Lily had a party to attend that afternoon. The rain continued and the wind picked up a pace. It wasn't until after we'd set off that we realised  how heavy the rain was, when we saw just how high the river had risen. Large tree branches were being washed along with ease and the water was already over the bank in places.
With a seventeen mile journey ahead of us, we had already checked the road reports before setting off and were hopeful that as long as the rain eased, then everything would be fine, but the further we went, the worse the weather became, so with the roads rapidly turning into small rivers and local businesses beginning to put up their flood barriers, we made the decision to turn around and return home. Naturally, Lily was disappointed, but it wasn't worth the risk. Even if we had managed to get there, with the state of the roads, there would be a strong chance we wouldn't have made it back again.

As is often the way in these parts, the following day could not have been more different. With hardly a breath of wind and the sun shining (along with the desperate need to get some fresh air following the previous day of being holed up indoors), we pulled on our wellies and set off for the woods to immerse ourselves in some seasonal colour.
The sunny weather made for a beautifully warm afternoon, although the ground was covered with leaves and sticks and it was clear from some of the pathways where the stream had washed out the day before, a line of silt and twigs indicating the water level at it's highest. The ground was still very waterlogged, with a huge puddle having appeared in the woodland clearing which, of course Lily discovered first,  much to her great delight.

There was plenty of leaf kicking, acorn gathering and prodding at various fungi with sticks,  then as we emerged from the woods, the difference between the two days couldn't have been more apparent, as we spotted a hot air balloon on the horizon.
As always, it was lovely to see the cheery display of pumpkins on sale at the farm shop, although I resisted buying one for the time being. Maybe next week.

  2. Safety first, I have seen big floods when we lived in Devon and it was really very frightening, and that wind last week was awful,it smashed some of our greenhouse glass, it was a fight to fix it quick before it all went.x

    1. The power behind the water is really quite frightening, and it's easy to see how large items are swept away. Combined with the wind it has the ability to be even more devastating. You must be relieved your greenhouse is OK. X

  3. Oh how disappointing for Lily but better safe than sorry. I think we missed the worst of the storm although we did have a lot of rain.
Love the photo of the pumpkins.

    1. To be honest Sheila, I thought she would have been more upset at missing the party, but I'm relieved she wasn't.
The display of pumpkins is always a lovely sight. X

  4. I heard it had been bad there - our phone was going mad with the Floodline warnings we get for Scotland - luckily our cottage must be Ok as no-one from the village rang to say otherwise! Shame Lily missed the party though - I expect it won't have been very nice for anyone getting married that day either.
What a lovely display of pumpkins so much nicer than all the plastic ones in the shops too - I would be tempted to buy one from the farm.
Love the bottom picture with the gate - I do love gates and doorways - they always beckon you in.

    1. As you well know, the affect on lives and property can be quite devastating, so it must have been a relief to know your cottage was OK. I understand a few other children missed out on getting to the party too.
I'm the same as you, but mainly with gates. I wonder what it is? X

  5. Great shots, I love the last one and the one after the close-up leaf shot. And Lily found a ladybird - I had one land on my hand when I was out photographing last Wednesday and when I looked up there were loads flying round in that particular spot. Autumn is a great time for photos isn't it? :)

    1. Thank you Eunice. Lily can spot ladybirds easily and likes them on her hands as they tickle. We had loads around last week and at one point we had around fifteen in the porch. X

  6. Nothing like a good walk to blow away the cobwebs of been cooped up indoors. Thankfully there was no real damage here either from Storm Callum but a reminder of reliant upon the ferries for stores. A joy to see your beautiful woods and the seasonal colour changes.

    1. It was a relief to get out, I'm not a fan of being cooped up for long. Although it did give me the opportunity to get on with some knitting.
I'm relieved to read all was OK with you. You must need to be very aware of your store cupboard and provisions, especially during the Winter months. X

  9. Ooh that storm sounded pretty nasty. It was a good job you didn't try to press on to the party. A shame for Lily that she missed the party, but what a lovely day you had in the woods; sunshine, golden leaves, ladybirds and puddles! I'm sure it was as much fun as any party! Jane :)

  10. I'm sorry that Lily was disappointed about the party but it's better to be safe than sorry. Did you get the swarm of ladybirds that flew in? They were here on Friday, we were plagued by them. They were climbing up the walls and windows and as soon as we opened the door a load of them flew in. It looks like the one Lily's holding is a native species, the ones I'm talking about are Harlequins.

Yes, we got the ladybirds. There were so many of them! We had around fifteen in the front porch one day. Lily likes to hold them because they tickle. X

  11. Wise to turn back, some things are just not worth risking. What a beautiful walk in the woods on Sunday though. Also top tip...don't leave car windows open during ferocious storm!! x

Yes Storm Callum did hit many areas … we have had rain these past few days too. I'm hoping it clears up for the weekend and the grandchildren's half term next week.

    Take Care

    All the best Jan

  17. I'm glad you decided to turn around when you did! Flooded roads can be very dangerous and you might not have been able to go back home if you had continued on to the party. I'm sure Lily was disappointed, but it sounds like she understood the reasons why you needed to turn around. I'm glad she got to play in the woods and enjoy herself, after the storm. :)

  19. We had the rain and the wind, I was due to do a event bike ride bit it was cancelled. The rain did stop in the afternoon and like you a walk in the fresh air was needed. It was very warm despite the wind. Loved hearing about your two days and your photos are lovely.

  20. That's a shame about the birthday party but I'd have made the same decision, especially being so far from home. I think that's why us Brits talk about the weather so much, we can go through all 4 seasons in a day sometimes! I love ladybirds, I used to keep them in matchboxes as pets when I was little. I'd poke air holes in the lid, put grass in and carry it around with me. Of course as soon as the box was opened it made it's escape. Half term here as well, the weeks since school started have flown by. xx
