Another Holiday at Home

This year, just like the last, we are holidaying from home. I am more than happy with this, as the thought of trying to book somewhere with availability, which is also affordable, at this present time did not appeal in the slightest. Better still, this way I have no planning or packing to do. ๐Ÿ˜€

With sunshine and high temperatures forecast for the remainder of the week, I don't intend on travelling very far. The fells can wait, as it is much too hot for walking just now. The paddling pool is up and I have some easy reading to keep me occupied. I have been working through some ideas as to how I would like to spend the coming weeks, but I have no desire to try and cram too much into our summer break. Even though I am still waking far too early in the morning, it is lovely not needing to rush around. Yesterday, I relaxed and read my book while Lily spent most of the afternoon in the water, the parasol providing her with some much needed relief from the sun's rays.

Mog can usually be found lying in the shade behind the shed, then she will disappear for hours leaving me worried, only for her to return home in the middle of the night, presumably having been sleeping among the long grass in the field.

Looking ahead, it would seem as if summer could go on forever, but I realise September will be here before I know it. Until then I intend to make the most of each day.

  1. We haven't had a holiday since 2018. We've been wondering whether to book a week or a fortnight away but we haven't so far. We've had some lovely days out, it can be just as much fun having a holiday at home, especially if the weather's good. I do feel for animals in this weather, Archie is beside himself at the moment, I don't blame Mog for finding herself somewhere cool to rest.

    1. It can be wonderful to enjoy some time off without the added stress of travelling, especially at such a busy time of year. I have some ideas of what I would like to do but, for now, I'm happy just to take things easy.
The hot weather can be difficult for our animals but Mog is pretty good at finding somewhere quiet and shady to keep cool. Does Archie have a paddling pool? X

    2. He doesn't. He loves the sea and he loves rivers but he hates the bath and I even struggle to get him to stand in a bowl of water to wash his paws when they're muddy so I'm not sure he'd use one.

    3. I would suggest a cool mat but Archie would probably just go a and lie elsewhere :) Animals can be funny. X

  2. My boys have very fond memories of 'stay at home holidays' when my husband and I could not take coinciding leave or enough leave to cover the entire school hols - so our stay at home days were filled with paddling pools, baking, drawing, reading and resting - and they survived (as did I!) enjoy the days and long may the nice weather continue x

    1. There is a lot to be said for staying close to home. No stress, no expense and no packing. And, of course, knowing all the best places to visit :)

  3. We're doing the same Jules. The photo looks worthy of any country cottage holiday and with the Lakes on your doorstep I somehow don't think you'll be missing out on anything :) xx

    1. I don't blame you, Suzanne. Although, I will be timing my days out very carefully - The Lakes will be even busier than usual this year. X

  4. Wisdom!

Base your lovely, peaceful, and non-hectic time, in your garden.

Please live in-the-moment. Don't think of how fast the time is going, or any such thoughts. All we really have, is now. Why waste it, dwelling in the past or in the future????? -smile-

  5. Your garden looks lovely Jules A holiday at home is good enough for me too and this weather is just gorgeous. I feel for Tilly though being black and furry and the pavements so hot for her little paws so I try to walk her early and then she likes to lie on the cool kitchen floor. Mog has the right idea too. My childhood memories are summers like we are having at the moment, I don't ever remember it raining. Enjoy every day of your well earned holiday at home x

    1. Thank you, Eileen. I'm sure Tilly will find somewhere to lie down and keep cool, my dog always used to favour the tiled floor in the kitchen too, or on a damp towel somewhere in the shade.
I don't remember it ever raining either :)

  6. I think you are very wise, with everyone staying in the UK this year most holiday places will be rammed. Nothing will beat the relaxation that you can get at home.

  11. That sounds wonderful. I have been doing the same thing. I do take the kayak out to the marina for a a paddle... but return home to the cottage. I pretend that it's a beach house, and play tapes of the ocean waves crashing on the shore. This heat is hard on the animals and plants...

    1. That sounds like a lovely and relaxing way to spend your days, Stephenie.
I've been watering the garden each evening when the sun goes down, but the plants are showing signs of struggling in this hot weather. X

  14. I don't know how I managed to miss this post. Your garden looks very pretty and the shed certainly doesn't look out of place. I wish my garden looked as nice but at the moment it's an overgown jungle.

  15. Same here. We thought about traveling this summer, but with everyone else traveling there is not much availability and everything seems to be extra expensive this summer, so we are staying home with a few day trips here and there. Honestly, I'm happy to not have to pack up and plan this summer.

    1. Packing and planning can become quite stressful, so it's quite nice not having the need to do it again this summer, and to make the most of our local area instead. X
